Our Rocha Rosa 2011 wine was made by our secret Australian winemaker.
Made from Syrah, Touriga Nacional, Alicante Bouschet and Aragonez, with a significant addition of Trincadeira. The grapes were harvested over three weeks from late August to mid September, in order to pick every batch at optimum ripeness, and fermented in temperature controlled steel tanks. 50% of the blend was aged for nine months in a mix of used French and American oak barrels. The result is a fruitier more forward drinking wine than the previous vintages.
Winemaker’s tasting note:
“Deep, dark intense red. Dark berry and plum fruit aromas. Rich, flavoursome and velvety palate which has good depth of ripe fruit. Smooth, soft and well balanced with a long finish. Drinking well on release but will improve in bottle over the next 2-3 years”.
The wine was entered in the Sommelier Wine Awards 2013 and won a Gold medal. The judges made the following comments “Fantastic complexity and warmth for the money brought Rocha Rosa Gold. Earthy spices underpin floral notes, dark cherry and forest fruit flavours. The balanced palate is youthful and dense, while the acidity is fresh and long. ‘This is a wine to suit all, with real pleasure offered in its supple fruit, a happy tasting wine that really over-delivers – an all round, easy-going, enjoyable option on the list, and maybe by the glass,’ said Enigna 88’s Michael Moore, suggesting steak, pork belly or pizza to match the big tannins.”
