Holidays at Tapada do Falcão
The Tapada do Falcão estate lies on the outskirts of the village of Caia, some
8 kms to the south of the cathedral town of Portalegre, 225 kms to the east of Lisbon and close to the Spanish border and Extremadura beyond. Guests usually fly to Lisbon and the spectacular Vasco de Gama bridge across the River Tagus and very good roads make the drive from the airport around two hours.
There are two rental properties on the estate, Tapada do Falcão and Casa do Outeiro. These are usually rented separately, but can be taken together if you are a large group. Both are surrounded by woodland and pastureland abounding with cork oaks, holm oaks, eucalyptus, olive trees and umbrella pines. Indigenous flowers and shrubs flourish in their natural state and the landscape is punctuated by numerous granite outcrops. Look up, and you are more than likely to see an eagle or a stork flying overhead.
The Serra de São Mamede Natural Park, an area of outstanding beauty, is on the doorstep and is an excellent location for walking and a haven for many of Europe’s rarest birds and animals. In spring, wildflowers carpet the hillsides.
The area is steeped in history and there are dramatic hilltop villages such as Marvao and Castelo de Vide to explore, and many roman and megalithic sites to visit.
